Three Layers of IT Architecture Consulting

Our 3 layers of IT architecture consulting allow us to respond to each client’s needs by applying the right skill set to the challenge at hand. Each phase builds from the previous, which ultimately determines the direction the project takes through to completion.

Conceptual Architecture provides a high-level view of the system. It describes the key elements as well as their responsibilities and interactions, which are all typically driven by business requirements.

Key Activities

  • Business objectives and requirements gathering
  • Non-functional requirements gathering
  • System goal setting
  • Multi-team collaboration

Logical Architecture represents the key components of the system required to meet the business goals. It identifies specific technologies and their dependencies, interactions and functional requirements as they pertain to the system.

Key Activities

  • Current state assessment including identification of deficiencies, risks and constraints
  • Functional requirements gathering
  • Technical dependency and interoperability assessment
  • Comparison of current and future states plus gap analysis
  • Creation of next phase artifacts such as bill of materials and implementation quotes

Physical Architecture identifies where and how key components are deployed for each technology in the system, including physical configurations and locations of components in a multi-technology system. Each component has its own physical architecture, generally aligned to vendor-published best practices or reference architectures.

Key Activities & Deliverables

  • Development of detailed implementation and post-implementation artifacts
  • Transition to operations knowledge transfer
  • Identification of vendors, models, versions, capacities and connections that make up the solution
  • Level of detail that enables purchase and deployment

The Right Expertise at the Right Time

Our cross-branch, multi-disciplinary architecture community delivers three levels of IT architecture expertise, each with its own skill sets, capabilities and value.

  • Enterprise Architects provide strategy definition and business alignment, helping IT organizations align better with their own businesses by creating processes, policies, strategies and frameworks. Our Enterprise Architecture experts are, in essence, business IT transformation agents.
  • Solution Architects bring multi-practice and multi-technology expertise. They have a broader technology focus and assist you with longer term strategic IT initiatives and large, multi-technology solutions. They initiate, lead and are key in the successful delivery of technology projects.
  • Technical Architects are highly specialized consultants who provide expert support in their respective technology or practice.

Our architecture practice supports the entire project through a combination of IT architecture, enterprise architecture and business architecture. We spend time up front to ensure programs and projects run smoothly through to completion. Throughout the planning, implementation and monitoring stages, we continuously consider how to best resolve your architecture challenges and deliver integrated solutions from a cross-practice perspective.
